snake's head fritillary (Fritillaria meleagris) established bulbs ( see 3rd, 4th pictures)

The Snakeshead fritillary is a distinctive and delicate wildflower native to the UK, commonly found in damp meadows and marshy grasslands. It blooms in spring, typically from March to May, displaying nodding, bell-shaped flowers with a unique checkered or chessboard pattern in shades of purple, pink, or occasionally white. This perennial plant grows from a bulb and can reach heights of 20-40 cm. Once widespread, it has declined due to habitat loss but can still be found in traditional floodplain meadows. It is a protected species in some areas and is valued for its ornamental beauty and ecological role in supporting pollinators.
